 IELTS New Writing Topic - Crime and Punishment


Some people believe that there should be fixed punishments for each type of crime. Others,however , argue the circumstance of an individual crime ,and the motivation for committing it, should always be taken into account when deciding on the punishment. Discuss both these views and give your own opinion. 

What makes fixed punishment attractive:

- It is a sure way to ensure impartiality of judiciary. It ensures that people with power and influence do not escape punishment. 

- It makes trials faster and easier, ensuring efficient functioning of judiciary and quick justice to victims.

Why individual circumstances deserve attention:

- Not all crimes arise out of the intent to hurt: some are accidental, some are the result of socio-economic pressures, and some are caused by ignorance.

- Ignoring the underlying reasons amounts to treating the symptoms of s disease. The chances of relapse are higher as the triggers remain unsolved.
