Latest IELTS writing topic - Space Research 

Some people believe that using taxpayer funds to look for life on other planets is important. Others, however, think that it is a waste of public money because there are much more important issues requiring funding on our own planet.

Discuss both views and give your opinion.

Why space research is essential:

- It is a wise investment for the welfare of humanity in the long term

- There is ample proof that Earth is gradually turning uninhabitable

- Life is threatened by climate change, depletion of resources, pollution, wars, epidemics 

- Humans will need to colonize some other planets due to man-made or natural reasons sooner or later

- Aliens might be able to offer some ridiculously simple solutions to the major problems on Earth

What makes space research less attractive:

- Space Research has made very little progress despite huge funding over these years

- With the slow progress, it will take many years for space research to yield any fruitful results

- It is not an answers to the major problems facing the current generation, including poverty, diseases, illiteracy, and so on

- Space Research does not offer any short term solutions to the issues on Earth
