IELTS 2023 Writing Topic- Hardwork and Luck

Some people believe that success in life comes from hard work and determination. Others think that it depends on factors such as money or personal appearance.

Discuss both views and give your opinion.

This is a topic that has appeared in IELTS writing many times and is highly likely to come again. 

Why some people consider hardwork the key to success:

- People mange to overcome many hurdles with willpower and hardwork

- This group primarily relies on well-known but rare anaecdots (Beethoven, Abraham Lincoln, Dr. Abdul Kalam Asad, for example)

However, the latter group seems to have stronger arguments. Some reasons to claim that success is influenced by many factors other than hardwork are:

- Hardwork becomes fruitful only in the right circumstances and only when one has the right opportunities 

- Those with factors like financial strength and good personal appearance usually access more opportunities than those without these do

- Those who enjoy more opportunities are more likely to be successful than those who rely on hardwork without these factors in their favour

- For example, the academic success of a student depends on not just hardwork but many other factors including level of intelligence, quality of teaching, family support, and so on. 

Thus, it is obvious that success depends on a variety of factors including hardwork and many other factors beyond a person's control.
